Chapter 2
It was a couple of miles to the forest, and then probably another half mile to get to the ravine. It was a good thing I was only 19 years old and in pretty good shape. Regardless, I was out of breath by the time I got there, and ended up bending over with my hands on my knees, trying to breathe.
âHoly crap! Maybe Iâm not in as good a shape as I thought.â Looking around, I realized that I had said that out loud.
Once I was able to breathe again, I walked slowly up to the ravine, the last 50 feet or so. I didn't want to make any noise. I had full recollection of being shot last time I was in the exact spot, and did not want a repeat of that.
When I reached the ravine, I tiptoed over to the edge and looked in, keeping my head low, just in case there was gunfire. Nothing. I scanned as far as the eyes could see, and still nothing. I stood and listened for at least a full minute for any hint of noise. Nothing. No arguing, no fighting, not even a quiet conversation. Just nothing.
I was confused. What was going on? I felt as if I had no choice but to climb down into the ravine and get a better look. Maybe there were bodies down there that I could not see from where I was standing.
Yeah, what if there were? And what if the killer was standing next to them? It was a terrible idea, and I knew it. Stillâ¦I felt like I had to find out for myself.
Before I had a chance to talk myself out of it, I walked along the ravine edge to a large grouping of rocks. It was next to those rocks, where the trail began, that led down into the ravine. And possibly to my death. I knew that, yet I apparently had no control over my actions. Because my feet were taking me down the path without my approval.
The moment my feet touched the bottom of the ravine, I heard shouting coming from above me. And dogs. Loud dogs that were probably looking for me. I donât know exactly what Georgie had said to them, but the sheriffâs department had wasted no time showing up. Regret at having my little sister make that phone call came bubbling up and hung in my throat.
I dove for the nearest bushes. I couldnât let the sheriff find me standing in the ravine, with no crime, no bodies, nothing to show for the phone call I had Georgie make to them. No, they wouldnât understand that at all.
But I obviously could not stay at the ravine. I needed to get out of there. And fast. Keeping on my hands and knees, I crawled my way through all of the bushes, hoping I could get far enough away before the dogs picked up my scent. I wasn't all that positive why there were dogs there at all.
